Plasma cannon is really nice and powerful, but it's too heavy and where the heck are you going to find more ammo?

Not plasma; that would burn everything, not just vaporize organic matter.
Microwave would cook organic matter, not dissolve it.

The effect look more like a fast action acid, but again not acid as it would attack everything.
